With the launch of Green Star Performance v2, the property sector has a powerful new opportunity to deliver meaningful, measurable outcomes for nature across existing portfolios.
For many asset owners and managers, improving biodiversity outcomes within established buildings can feel complex, costly or constrained by physical limitations. However, the Nature Stewardship Credit provides a simple and impactful pathway to contribute to nature restoration without requiring structural changes to existing assets.
The Wilderlands team have been working with the Nature Collective’s Stephanie Sirianni to raise awareness of how Wilderlands Biological Diversity Units can be used to achieve the Nature Stewardship Credit for both the Buildings Tool and Performance Rating.
They recently ran a session showing how using the Wilderlands biodiversity credit can help protect our most precious ecosystems, whilst offering predictable pricing, no design implications, and reliable points towards your Green Star pathway.
Introduction to the Nature Stewardship Credit
The Green Star Nature Stewardship Credit has been recently introduced by the Green Building Council of Australia to encourage developers aiming for a Green Star Buildings or Performance Rating on new and existing buildings to have a positive impact on biodiversity offsite.
Under the Green Star Performance tool, projects can achieve up to 3 points by protecting an equivalent area of land for conservation offsite, matching either the asset’s Gross Floor Area (GFA) or site area (whichever is greater).
Wilderlands has been working closely with the Australian property sector to make this pathway accessible, credible and scalable.
Through our Nature Stewardship Credit solution, property owners can fund the permanent protection and management of high-value conservation land, delivering measurable biodiversity outcomes aligned with Green Star requirements.
We currently have four ready-to-protect conservation projects across Australia that meet the Nature Stewardship Credit criteria.
These sites have been carefully selected based on ecological significance, long-term protection mechanisms and their ability to deliver genuine conservation outcomes including habitat protection for threatened species, restoration of degraded ecosystems and strengthened landscape resilience.

Beyond achieving rating points, investing in biodiversity protection presents a broader opportunity for the property sector to create deeper connections between buildings, customers and nature.
By sharing conservation stories within properties through signage, digital storytelling, events or curated nature activations, asset owners can bring the impact to life. Tenants, visitors and local communities can learn about the flora and fauna being protected, understand the importance of biodiversity conservation and feel part of a tangible environmental solution.
These initiatives can be further strengthened by enhancing biodiversity outcomes on-site, such as native planting, habitat features or nature-based wellbeing spaces. When combined with offsite protection, this creates a holistic nature strategy that delivers both measurable impact and meaningful engagement.

Wilderlands supports property owners and managers with quick portfolio or project assessments, helping determine the scale of biodiversity protection required, potential conservation projects and providing transparent pricing to meet Nature Stewardship Credit thresholds. We are also working alongside developers to bring to life bespoke conservation projects for specific projects or portfolios.
Current investment rates start from approximately $3 per square metre, enabling organisations to protect significant areas of Australia’s precious biodiversity in a cost-effective and credible way.

As one of Australia’s largest land users and economic drivers, the property sector has a unique opportunity to contribute to national biodiversity outcomes. By integrating biodiversity protection into asset strategies today, the industry can play a leadership role in building a nature-positive built environment.
Together, we can deliver lasting conservation outcomes while enhancing the value, performance and social impact of property portfolios.
