Background

Since launching in August 2022, Wilderlands has emerged as a global leader in the biodiversity credits market with our Biological Diversity Unit © which represents a one square metre plot of land that is permanently protected and actively managed for 20 years.

Wilderlands partners with leading conservation organisations to unitise their impact and develops voluntary biodiversity credits which currently support four high-conservation value projects across Australia.

Underpinned by a proprietary methodology leveraging conservation covenant regulations, each unit is geotagged, certified, and independently registered.

Supporters can track their impact and receive regular reports from expert on-ground ecologists.

For companies looking to incorporate nature into their sustainability strategies, Wilderlands’ biodiversity credits offer a simple, credible entry point-prompting increasing demand from environmental market brokers eager to include BDUs in their offerings.

This demand sparked a partnership with Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM) culminating in the launch of a game-changing new solution.

The Product

In mid 2024, TEM partnered with Wilderlands to launch the Extended Impact solution which combines a one-square-metre Wilderlands Biological Diversity Unit (BDU) with any certified carbon credits available through TEM online.

TEM’s launch announcement highlighted growing market appetite for a solution that combines measurable carbon emissions reduction with tangible biodiversity protection.

“We’ve noticed a shift in organisations wanting to support projects local to them and their operations, while also meeting their carbon emissions reduction targets,” said Brett Giddings, Head of Growth, Customers and Partnerships, TEM.

Among the first 15 companies to purchase the solution were Matchbox Pictures, ACOR Consultants and Laneway Music Festival.

“At ACOR, we are committed to a sustainable future. In measuring our carbon footprint, we elected to offset our flight emissions in FY2024 and wanted to do so by supporting local initiatives. We selected to purchase offsets via TEM as they were recommended by one of our partners and cover programs in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. We are proud to support the Wilderlands Alleena project in NSW and contribute to the protection of nature,” said Michael Goodwin, MD, ACOR Consultants.

The Alleena project is one of the four properties available through Wilderlands and is a dedicated conservation reserve in NSW, that aims to address the decline of the suite of birds dependent on intact woodland ecosystems.

Other projects include a grasslands in Victoria that spreads across the vast plain alongside the Avoca River and helps protect the Critically Endangered ‘Natural Grasslands of the Murray Valley Plains’ as well as a tall forest in the Otways, Victoria..

It is, however, Wilderlands Coorong Lakes project which has seen the greatest demand from companies to support. Co designed and co-managed with the traditional owners of the region the Ngarrindjeri people, the Coorong Lakes property is home to over 61 native bird species and 222 plant species including the world’s largest known populations (on private land) of the nationally endangered Metallic Sun-orchid.

It is important to note that the Extended Impact solution meets the requirements of the Australian Government’s Climate Active Program, with each unit retired on an independent registry, ensuring transparency and credibility.

The Results

In less than six months over 100,000 Biological Diversity Units were purchased as part of the Extended Impact solution.

This response far exceeded any expectations and demonstrated the market’s readiness to step into this burgeoning biodiversity market when a high-quality product is presented through a trusted source such as TEM.

Through conversations with customers it also became clear that companies were not only looking to act, but also eager for deeper ways to engage with the work they’re supporting and opportunities to learn alongside their peers.

In recognition of this, TEM teamed up with Wilderlands to create an exclusive immersion experience for their customers and the result was incredible.

The Immersion

In June 2025, Wilderlands and TEM led our first corporate immersion where we travelled alongside 15 leaders representing some of Australia’s largest companies to our Coorong Lakes project.

Co-designed with TEM, the experience supports those  shaping their organisation’s nature and carbon strategies and offers a first-hand understanding of how environmental, financial, and brand goals can align through credible, on-the-ground action.

Attendees included a range of TEM’s customers including leaders from Goodman, Lion, BHP, ANZ, Woolworths, Investa, Allens, Suncorp, and CBRE, as well as the South Australian Government, who had the chance to explore the Coorong Lakes project which is located in the heart of Meningie, South Australia and encompasses a sprawling 200 hectares.

The immersion enabled existing buyers to deepen their engagement and offered those still considering action a rare opportunity to learn, connect, and witness the impact first-hand.
